Protecting ourselves – from ourselves

In the wake of the tragic death of driver Kevin Ward, Jr., Nascar now has a rule requiring drivers to remain in their race cars after accidents until safety workers arrive, unless they are at risk from fire or smoke. It is hoped this will prevent drivers from running into traffic after accidents to intimidate the guilty driver.

But the speedway isn't the only place where competitors can let their emotions take over their common sense. Officials in other sports besides car racing should take heed.

In baseball we should have a rule that, when you think the pitcher is throwing at you, you're not allowed to lean over the plate and try to catch the next pitch in your teeth.

In basketball, when the other team shows you up with a fancy dunk, you're prohibited from climbing to the rafters, throwing the ball through the net – and following it through yourself.

In football, after a TD celebration by your opponents, you shall not strip naked and moon them.

Oh, on the way home in your luxury sports car? Put on your damn seat belt.
