Humor is good

Hence the theme of this blog. But humor to excess, or humor misplaced, may not be good.

Such is the case with the annual spectacle that is the White House Correspondents Association dinner, where journalists dress up along with the politicians they cover and laugh at one another. The 2014 edition took place Saturday. Like his recent predecessors, featured comic Joel McHale seemed less concerned with getting laughs than in making his audience squirm in discomfort.

The relationship between government and the news media is an adversial one. Timely humor can help ease the tension but this burlesque can only fuel resentment and revenge.

It's time to end it.
