'Candidate Romney, I presume'

With the nomination of Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential candidate apparently official, we may be free of at least one excessive word:

Presumptive.

As noted earlier, modern man has acquired many of these words -- but also syllables. Until now presumptive had been found in virtually every news item on Romney, but why? We presumed that he would be the Republican nominee for president, so why wasn't he simply the presumed nominee?

It's the same reason that utilize often stands in for use. There's the notion that multisyllabic adjectives add weight to one's statements. To heed my own advice, I should say that long words -- seem more important than short ones.

I presume you're nodding in agreement.
