Sometimes you just can't win

I have no idea who the Republican candidate will be and whether he will prevail in November, but if it's Romney and he does win I'm absolutely sure of one thing. The day after the inauguration, Santorum, Gingrich and several others will renew their campaigns on the basis that "the president is too moderate to win in 2016."

-----

Given the need for any politican, in office or out, to always be in fundraising mode, I fear the day when a president opens an event with a pitch for campaign contributions -- forgetting that it's a global summit.

"And be sure to pick up your lawn signs on the way out."

-----

Previously I have observed how a particular usage develops and promptly becomes common usage -- to wit, ahead of.

Now comes absolutely. I find it amazing how often absolutely is used to answer question, when that's right, I agree or even yes would be more appropriate.

Could you get a little closer to the microphone?

Absolutely!

Did you run into much traffic on your way here?

Absolutely!

Would you like some water?

Absolutely!

To me, absolutely applies only when one wants to add emphasis to the answer.

Are you convinced yours is the only solution to the problem?

Absolutely!

Do you expect everyone to join in your effort?

Absolutely!

Do you agree that any term becomes weakened by overuse?

A-a-a-a-b-b-b-solutely!
