'Here's mud in your eye!'

Today President Obama has his daily briefings and meetings with the President of the Philippines, the Secretary of the Treasury and the Vice President. No doubt he'll be discussing the war on terror, nuclear threats, the economy and other details.

But you can bet all of the media's focus will be on the last agenda item - Happy Hour with Professor Henry Louis Gates and Boston Police Sergeant James Crowley.

I can see it now: The president will emerge, suppress a belch and pronounce the meeting a success. "Talks were constructive," he'll say diplomatically.

But the press will learn things started badly when the sergeant tried to frisk Gates and the professor went over to the White House jukebox and selected "I Shot the Sheriff."

That was an odd little gathering at the White House, made all the odder by the Veep joining in. You know how he can sometimes be quite impolitic. And all that attention to the kind of beer they drank.
Jesus, I've now officially had enough of this silly story already!

Like I said, the media barons have embraced news as the original reality show. Milk every event for all it's worth.

It's unbelievable how far TV "news" has fallen. All the coverage about Cronkite was a vivid reminder of how bad it's gotten in a relatively short period, and how much that's cost us. It's all mostly theatre now.
